Working in Upstate New York Pronouns: he/him/his &amp; they/them/theirs Ruben Castillo is a visual artist and educator investigating themes of intimacy, queerness, archival history, and the body using a range of media including print, drawing, installation, sculpture, and video. His most recent imagery draws from photographs and documents, seeing the ordinary as a site for transformative potentials and connections. Castillo’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally at venues such as Print Center New York (NY), the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (KS), the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (MO), Petaluma Art Center (CA), Haw Contemporary (MO), Semillas Galeria (MN), Highpoint Center for Printmaking (MN), Zygote Press (OH), Blowing Rock Art &amp; History Museum (NC), Big Medium (TX), Front Gallery (LA), San Dao Gallery (Wuhan, China), and Doosung Paper Gallery (Seoul, Korea) among others. His work has been collected widely, both privately and publicly at institutions such as the Museum of Texas Tech (TX), Brooklyn Art Library (NY), Crossroads Hotel (MO), Mexic-Arte Museum (TX), Mulvane Art Museum (KS), National Museum of Mexican Art (IL), Queer.Archive.Work (RI), Zuckerman Museum of Art (GA), The Turner Print Museum (CA), and the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), among others. In 2023 he received the Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Art Award and was a finalist for the 21C Kansas City Artadia Award. Ruben was born in Dallas, TX and received his MFA in Visual Art from the University of Kansas and a BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute. He has taught printmaking and drawing at the Kansas City Art Institute (MO) and Johnson County Community College (KS). He is currently an Assistant Professor of Printmaking in the Art Department at Skidmore College (NY) and is the Co-managing Editor of the Mid America Print Council Journal. 2, 2022 Phototex vinyl decals with color etchings on paper My recent archival research observes domesticity, craft, and reparative reading. Greatest Hits: Vol 1 &amp; 2, mines the Gay &amp; Lesbian Archive of Mid America’s Spirit of Hope two-volume scrapbook to summarize glimpses of queer life alongside seemingly banal beauty. The books are a collection of any Kansas City LGBT-related newspaper headline collected by Phyllis Shafer between the 1930s to the 1980s, clipped and pasted onto pages of wallpaper samples. Looking past the troubling content of the headlines, I fixate on moments where she interjects herself through personal notations and material organization. Phyllis’s examples of matriarchal labor and care become symbols of liberatory practice. Her tactics, such as weaving and storytelling, gesture toward queer futurity. Inspired by Phyllis’ urgent and spontaneous acts, Greatest Hits: Vol. 1 &amp; 2 presents digitally re-stitched wallpaper patterns and arrangements alongside other textual artifacts to build cross-generational connections of love, loss, and hope. Alongside these works are text and pattern-based images as intaglio and digital prints – what I refer to as proposals or samples. I install them modularly, providing moments of unexpected discovery mirroring the feeling of discovery within the archives. With my installation, I ask the viewer to consider what they desire to learn and uncover. The project is about making space for reflection and emotional connection across textures. The print signaled a shift in my work, exploring the fragments of life during the Covid-19 pandemic. I was influenced by adrienne maree brown’s 2018 book Emergent Strategy, particularly with the influence of dandelions, growth, and distant gestures of love from friends. This print looks at the queer reciprocity from Frank O’Hara’s poem “Having a Coke With You,” envisioned here as “having a flower with you.” Additionally, as part of the Queer Ecology Hanky Project, I was inspired by the early 70s gay hanky code wherein gay men would signal to one another sexual desires and the roles they would play in those activities. In early iterations of the code, light blue indicated a desire for oral sex. While looking back at my archive of photographs documenting mine and my partner’s disheveled bed in the morning, I noticed a consistent set of photographs spanning one full week at the onset of the spring solstice. I was drawn to this idea of change and growth associated with the season. My practice slowly began to shift during this time to be about learning and a patient production, focusing on the space and context of gathering, of quiet, of intimacy. During the Covid-19 pandemic however, the simultaneity of stillness and transformation occurring in everyday life brought a natural disruption to established routines. This new work was produced under my own tense framework of urgency that avoided overthinking—these prints are purely about play and curiosity. This imagery draws upon nature and the biological systems modeling change, the concept of emergence, and the added coincidence that the start of the 2020 pandemic lockdown also happened before a spring solstice. Inspired by DIY instructional videos and Martha Rosler’s seminal video work, Semiotics of the Kitchen, I reflect on the question “how to self-care?” Taking the form of a how-to, I present every pillow in my home and proceed to fluff each one. In-between footage of this action are scenes of my partner massaging me. Both the pillows and myself become objects to be “fluffed” and made more comfortable. The title of the work further references the act of “fluffing” in pornographic films where a male actor is kept aroused between cuts. Nothing in the video is done in a naturalistic or arousing way – instead, all of it exists within an obsessive state of anxiety. The works collectively describe intimacy in context to the ordinary and how memory, feeling, and people become intimately embedded in the objects and spaces of home. Our Pillows is a group of large etchings originating from a practice of documenting mine and my partner's pillows every morning after waking up. The site of these pillows become after-images of the night before, suspended in a dream-like space made from the pressed texture of bed sheets etched into metal. The objects occupying our domestic spaces become stand-ins for us, reflecting back facets of our identity and mediating shared forms of emotional connection. The qualities of pillows reflect ideas of softness, rest, and comfort. The works reflect my sentimentality towards physical connection over words within my relationships, particularly the way that a single touch can lovingly communicate ease, care, and yearning.
